PRINCETON, N.J.— The Wisconsin men's rowing program continued the fall slate with another trip to the East Coast, this time making waves on Lake Carnegie Sunday at the Princeton Chase.
Despite a rudder malfunction late in the varsity eight race, Wisconsin's first eight battled back to earn a spot in the top three, finishing third behind Princeton and Dartmouth with a time of 13:12.148.
The Badgers' second and third eights also fared well in the race, taking 12th and 18th out of 36 entries to finish in the top half of the group.
Notably, Wisconsin's second eight beat out Yale's 'B' entry by less than four-tenths of a second in the final portion of the race to secure the 12th-place finish with a time of 13:47.700.
In the varsity four, three of the Badgers' six crews placed in the top 10. Wisconsin's first four rowed to a fifth-place finish with a time of 15:12.714, crossing the line just eight seconds behind top finisher Princeton 'B'.
The Badgers' second and third fours finished one after another to take eighth and ninth out of 26 entries.

Head Coach Chris Clark
On today's results:
"My hope in this race. For a lot of these guys, it was their one and only race in the fall. Some had been to the Head of the Charles. I hoped that we could step it up a notch just having one more week's prep and sure enough, we did. Overall I'd say the performances fit right into my most optimistic expectation. We were third in the first eight, which I was real happy with. We're right in the thick of it where we should be."
"I told the guys that, in my entire time here as varsity coach, we have never rowed less in the fall because of the high water issues I talked about earlier. We're conditioned at least for rowing, but far less than we normally are. That didn't seem to stop our guys and their attack, so that was great."
"Another thing that was pleasing was that of the 24 guys in the eights, at least half had never been in an EARC or other big-time dual race ever. They're really inexperienced. Last year in this race, out of 24 guys we probably had at least 16 seniors, so this is a really raw group. They handled it well."
"The sophomores will race next week with freshmen in Indianapolis, whereas the juniors and seniors are done for the fall. Again, the best expectation I had was that we would step it up from the Head of the Charles, which we absolutely did. This is a real easy group to work with. We're not a hugely powerful squad whatsoever, but man did these guys get after it in that race. In the long run, that's what you want the most of. Eventually, the results will come."
