Byrne earns his 37th career coaching accolade after leading UW to 49th conference title
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne was named the Big Ten Conference Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.
Byrne led the Badgers to their 49th Big Ten team title on Sunday in Lincoln, Nebraska, thanks to the one-two punch of Morgan McDonald and Olli Hoare. McDonald won his second career Big Ten cross country title after winning the 2016 conference championship.
The Badgers recorded 38 points to easily take the team title over Purdue, who finished second with 88 points, and Indiana, who finished third with 108 points. It marked UW's best score at the Big Ten meet since the Badgers scored 33 points en route to winning the 2012 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
The Badgers' 50-point margin of victory was also the conference's best mark since UW won the 2009 title by 65 points.
This year's team crown marked the eighth Big Ten cross country title won under Coach Byrne's direction. Byrne's eight Big Ten titles rank third in conference history behind Martin Smith (12) and Jerry Schumacher (11).
It marks the 10th time Byrne has won a coach of the year honor from the Big Ten as he owns eight cross country awards and a pair of track and field honors. The award is also the 25th men's cross country conference coach of the year Byrne has collected since earning his first at Iona in 1991.
In addition, men's senior Tyson Miehe and women's senior Shaelyn Sorensen were named Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honorees.
