MADISON, Wis. – After competing in the Great Lakes Regional meet, the Wisconsin cross country program brought home two automatic bids to the NCAA Championship meet, a Regional Athlete of the Year, and Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year.
Alicia Monson was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Women's Athlete of the Year while Mick Byrne was named the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Men's Coach of the Year.
Monson continued her breakout junior season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional becoming the first Badger in 17 years to win the regional title. Monson also won the Big Ten Cross Country Championships last month and became the first Badger to win the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational back in September.
The first Badger to win the USTFCCCA honor since Bethany Brewster in 2001, Monson led UW to a runner-up finish at this year's regional meet.
Byrne led the UW men's squad to its 30th Great Lakes Regional crown, the program's 49th Big Ten cross country title and a No. 3 ranking in the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll.
This is the seventh time that Byrne has been named the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region's Coach of the Year after he was named the Big Ten's Men's Coach of the Year this year.
