Wisconsin’s diving team gears up for three-day meet in Iowa City
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin diving contingent is heading across the Mississippi River for a three-day stay at the Hawkeye Invitational, beginning Thursday in Iowa City, Iowa. Before the Badgers leap into action, here are five things you should know.Â
Â
1. NCAA Notables:Â Wisconsin will enter competition Thursday with five NCAA zone meet tickets already punched.
Â
Sophomore Brayden Schachle, junior Kevin Pomeroy and seniors Alex Hafey, Hazel Hertting and Andrew Pearce have all notched NCAA zone qualifying marks this season.Â
Â
"They have all been competitive and consistent in their training," diving coach Anton Slobounov said. "They have seized their moment and I'm optimistic that more will follow."
Â
2. Familiar Faces:Â Thirteen teams are slated to participate in the Hawkeye invitational, among them Big Ten rivals Minnesota and Purdue, who the Badgers have already competed against this season.
Â
"The energy and competiveness of those teams can inspire us to rise to the occasion," Slobounov said. "But no matter who we compete against, our success is contingent on making the least mental errors, so we encourage our divers to compete against themselves."
Â
3. Meet Minutiae:Â The event will span three days, Thursday through Saturday, featuring men's and women's 1-meter, 3-meter and platform dives with invitational-style preliminary and final rounds.Â
Â
On Thursday men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter prelims begin at 1 p.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m.
Â
The Badgers enjoy one night's slumber before men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter prelims begin at 1 p.m., proceeded by finals at 6 p.m., on Friday.Â
Â
Wisconsin will polish competition off on the platforms, beginning at noon Saturday.
Â
4. Live Look: Results from the Hawkeye Invitational can be found on the Meet Mobile app and will be updated online. Living diving scores will be available via DiveMeets.com.
Â
5. Onward & Outward: The Wisconsin swimmers will be back in competition at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Nov. 28 through Dec. 1.Â
