Sebastian Iqbal and Coalter Smith make up Badgers’ recruiting class
MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin men's golf coach Michael Burcin announced Thursday that Sebastian Iqbal and Coalter Smith have signed National Letters of Intent to attend UW and play golf for the Badgers beginning in the fall of 2018.
"Both of these guys are such good people and they come from strong families," Burcin said. "It is a class that demonstrates our continued commitment to bringing kids in from the Midwest and the West coast. Both played come from strong instructional backgrounds with their instructors doing great work. We are excited to have both players and their families be a part of our Badger program."
Iqbal is a native of San Jose, California and attends Pioneer High School. He is currently ranked 30th among junior golfers in California and No. 187 in the country. He has recorded seven top-10 finishes in the last 12 months, including winning the 2018 Junior Tour of Northern California Fall Series IX at Poppy Ridge GC.
"Sebastian is another piece of our recruiting efforts in California, following Brett Robinson and Nick Robinson," Burcin said. "He comes from a family of strong players with his sister at TCU and his father, who is a club professional. Anytime you have a person who competes as well as he has in the ultra-competitive state like California, you are getting an impact player. We're thrilled with how excited and energetic he is to be in Madison and be a Badger. He has loved Madison from his first visit and we are excited to have a player of Sebastian's ability."
Smith, a native of Gross Pointe Farms, Michigan, attends Gross Pointe South High School. He is currently ranked fourth among junior golfers in Michigan and No. 150 in the country. As a junior he finished third at the Michigan Division 1 state championship, helping Gross Pointe South to the team state title. A two-time all-state selection, Smith also placed third as a sophomore. In his last two tournaments, he has placed second at the Golf Association of Michigan Junior Invitational and tied for seconds at the American Junior Golf Association Randy Wise Junior Open.
"I feel very fortunate to have Coalter joining our program," Burcin said. "The last year or two, the state of Michigan has a deep pool of kids ranked very high nationally and Coalter had a lot of options of where to continue his career. He carries a lot of quiet confidence and is always looking for new ways to analyze his game and get better. That is very mature for someone his age and I think he will adjust nicely to the college game."
