MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin (9-5-2 overall, 6-2 B1G) looks to continue its dominant play in the postseason, starting the with the Big Ten Tournament. The Badgers are set to play Rutgers (4-12-1, 2-6 B1G) on Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Complex starting at 12 p.m. (CT).
1. RIVETING REVIEW: With two games to go in the regular season against Northwestern and Ohio State, followers of Division I soccer could fairly easily speculate that the Badgers would close with two wins. That's exactly what the Cardinal and White did – with some added showmanship for special effects. The Badgers claimed a conference win over Northwestern on Wednesday behind none other than freshman
Noah Melick. The freshman provided the same late-game antics viewers are getting used to by slotting a goal to the upper-ninety in the 102
nd minute to win, 2-1. Sunday's season finale was another thriller. This time Melick's counterpart,
Andrew Akindele got the credit for the overtime heroics. Akindele collected his own rebound and slotted home the gamewinner with one minute and 17 seconds left in double overtime.
2. FRESHMEN PHENOMS:Â Freshmen
Andrew Akindele and
Noah Melick are concrete examples of hard work paying off. Both freshmen worked tirelessly in exhibitions, practice, and games to earn a starting spot at the forward position. Now, both are reaping what hard work sowed. Akindele is posting a phenomenal freshman campaign, tallying 10 points on three goals and four assists. The same can be said for his counterpart. Melick earned the Big Ten Player of the Week award for his two-goal performance against Rutgers, before scoring the game-winning goal against No. 18 Michigan in double overtime a week ago. Melick now boasts nine total points on the season behind four goals and an assist. Three of Melick's four goals have been game-winners.
3. SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS:Â The Rutgers Scarlet Knights close out their season with a 4-12-1 overall record and 2-6 mark in the Big Ten. The last time the Badgers faced Rutgers was a breakout game for freshman star
Noah Melick, in the pouring rain no less, and also at McClimon. The Badgers weren't hesitant in delivering a crushing victory to the Scarlet Knights winning 4-2. Wisconsin and Rutgers have faced only once before in the Big Ten Tournament on Nov. 8, 2014, where Rutgers won, 5-2. UW holds a 4-2 all-time advantage over Rutgers and has won four-straight.
4. CAPTIVATING CLOSE:Â Wisconsin has absolutely crushed it down the regular season stretch. The Cardinal and White are now 7-1-1 in its last nine games. The seven wins include victories over then-No. 5 Michigan State, perennial powerhouse Maryland, and No. 15 Michigan. The Badger's success in conference play produced a 6-2 Big Ten record, which is the most conference wins in school history.
