Wisconsin turns in best defensive effort of season
MADISON, Wis. – Hoping to bounce back from a loss against intra-state opponent Green Bay, the Wisconsin women's basketball team wasted no time making its intentions known Wednesday night at the Kohl Center.
Score. Wisconsin did just that, defeating Chicago State, 85-38.
UW (8-3) jumped out to an early lead over CSU (0-9), exiting the first quarter with a 29-13 advantage. The score was tied just once, 2-2, in the first quarter, but after UW pulled away it never looked back. CSU pulled within two, 9-7, with 5:38 to play in the first before Wisconsin went on a 7-0 run to set the tone of the game early.
Going into halftime, UW held onto a 50-20 lead, behind contributions from nearly the entire roster. In the second quarter, all of Wisconsin's points came from eight players, who helped UW outscore CSU 21-7.
Wisconsin kept finding the basket, eventually reaching the 85-38 final score, behind 13 points from senior Marsha Howard, 13 from redshirt freshman Alex Luehring, 12 from freshman Imani Lewis, and 10 from both Kelly Karlis and Abby Laszewski.
Laszewski picked up her first career double-double as she added a game-high 10 rebounds, helping the Badgers out-rebound the Cougars 56-41.
Wisconsin shot 40.3 percent (29-72) from the field and held CSU to just 18 percent (11-60) shooting. The Badgers also shot 70 percent (21-30) from the free-throw line while the Cougars made 66.7 percent (14-21).

Head Coach Jonathon Tsipis
"After Saturday, knowing we had not played our best basketball, I thought on Sunday, our kids did a really good job of getting away from the Kohl Center for a day. Monday was probably our best practice of the year. We started it with rebounding because we felt that was a key component of the game against Green Bay that we let get away from us. I think the byproduct we got out of that was that the last two days, we went more against ourselves than our practice players. I loved the competitive fight that we had. We're continuing to talk about where our defense is at compared to this point a year ago and where our offense needs to continue to grow."
R-Freshman Guard Alex Luehring
On expanding her game beyond three-point shooting:
"When my shots aren't falling, I want to look to pass a little bit more and try not to be a one-dimensional player. With shooting, I want to try to work on getting to the basket. We work on that a lot in practice in our position work, in getting to the rim, and in the reads we can make against the different defenses of the teams we'll be playing. That's something we worked on a lot in preparing for Chicago State was driving so that's why I tried to take advantage of that tonight."
Junior Forward Abby Laszewski
On the importance of staying consistent:
"Like Coach Tsipis said, I try to work a lot with (assistant) coach Kayla (Tetschlag) on a lot on my finishes because they can sometimes be a little frustrating. Getting in the game with rebounds was good for me today. Just trying to get my feet in there and steady is something I've been working on."
