PEORIA, Arizona -- Led by four individual top-15 finishes, the Wisconsin women's golf team put on a display never before seen in school history. The Badgers finished the 54-hole Westbrook Invitational with a 20-under par score of 844. That mark is 11 strokes better than the previous 54-hole record of 855, set at the Minnesota Invitational less than six months ago.
"I'm really proud of how our players continue to push us forward," UW head coach
Todd Oehrlein said. "The golf course was in great condition and we had fantastic weather. I thought we managed the course well and capitalized on the opportunities when they were presented. I think our depth showed up again and it was a very solid effort from everyone."
After an even-par first round on Sunday at the Westbrook Village Golf Course in Peoria, Arizona, the Badgers caught fire in the afternoon round. UW's 277 in the second round was a school record, topping the 281 posted at the 2013 Lady Paladin Invitational. Senior
Becky Klongland led the way, tying the school record with a 7-under par round of 65.
UW stayed hot in Monday's final round, posting the best round of the day with a 9-under par 279. That is the second-best 18-hole score in school annals. Four Badgers shot under par on the day, led by senior
Aya Johnson's 4-under par 68.
Klongland's 5-under par total of 211 is tied for the second-best 54-hole score in school history. Her score was good for a share of ninth place, her fourth career top-10 finish and first this season.Â
Johnson, who became the first UW women's golfer to shoot two rounds of 68 or better in the same tournament, was one of three Badgers a stroke back of Klongland. She was joined by senior
Gabby Curtis and junior
Jessica Reinecke at 4-under par, good for a tie for 13th. Â Their total of 212 is tied for the fifth-best 54-hole score in school history.
Junior Nat Zeng made her 2017-18 season debut, competing as an individual after sitting out the fall due to an injury. All she did in her first outing was set a personal best with a 54-hole total of 217. That was good for a share of 38th place. Â Freshman
Claire Fitzgerald made her collegiate debut, also competing as an individual. After birdieing her first hole of the tournament, she tied for 68th place with an 8-over total of 224. Among those she tied with was senior
Lexi Harkins, whose best score was a 73 in the second round.
