CLEVELAND, OHIO- Day three of the 2018 NCAA Championships in the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio concluded on a high note Saturday, as freshman and No. 10 seed Evan Wick beat his seed and then some, placing third in the country at 165 pounds after two big victories. Wick received a roar from the 19,267 fans in attendance and hugs from his coaches when he locked in the cradle on Lock Haven's No. 9 seed Chance Marsteller for the clinching pin.
"It's an awesome opportunity to be the last wrestler in college to wrestle for Coach Barry," Wick said in his post-match interview. "I love him so much. He's got an incredible passion for the sport, he's very innovative. A lot of the stuff that I'm doing out here I wouldn't be able to do without Coach Barry, so I love him, wish him the best and will always be in contact."

What commenced after Wick's victory was a touching standing ovation from the crowd for Coach Davis, with the 25-year leader of the Badgers giving his signature fist pump and salute as he walked off the mat.

Wick made these moments possible when he began the day facing off with Iowa's 165-pound freshman phenom and No. 5 seed Alex Marinelli. Wick struck first, recording a takedown just over a minute into the match, but Marinelli came back and took the lead 3-2 with an escape and takedown. Wick escaped before the buzzer, tying the score at 3 at the end of the first period. The second period is where the Badger took over, recording a takedown and locking in a cradle to get a pair of four-point near falls, part of a 10-0 scoring run that put the match at a 13-3 Wisconsin advantage. Wick rode out Marinelli for the entire third, recording another two points from stalling and riding time en route to a 15-3 major decision victory.

The Murrieta, California native then faced the No. 9 seed Chance Marsteller (44-4) of Lockhaven in the third place bout Saturday afternoon, where things began in Marsteller's favor. The Bald Eagle opened with a 4-1 lead, scoring two takedowns on Wick in the first period. Wick chose top to begin the second and would do to Marsteller exactly what he did to Minnesota's Nick Wanzek the night before to become an All-American: Use his lanky, 6-foot-2-inch frame to wrap around his opponent and get the cradle locked in for the pin.
