Badgers pick up eight wins to seal team victory at the California Collegiate Open

SAN DIEGO – The Wisconsin women's track and field team opened up their outdoor season in sunny California this weekend with a win at the California Collegiate Open, hosted by UC-San Diego.

The Badgers picked up eight individual titles to finish the meet with 179 points.

Highlighting the action for the Badgers on Saturday was redshirt freshman Sophia Rivera, who broke the school record in the javelin on her first attempt with a heave of 175 feet, 2 inches. That mark broke the previous record by almost five feet and ranks No. 2 in the Big Ten Conference and No. 7 in the NCAA this year.

It was also big day for Meagan Blair who swept the horizontal jumps. Blair earned a huge personal best in the long jump with a mark of 19-1 1/2 (5.83m), beating her previous PR by almost two feet. The sophomore went on to finish off the day with a win in the triple jump with an outdoor PR of 39-3 3/4 (11.98m).

The Badgers went 1-2-3 in the 5000 meters, earning big points for Wisconsin. Alicia Monson was the victor, coming in with a time of 16 minutes 11.81 seconds. Shaelyn Sorensen took the runner-up spot with a personal best time of 16:21.31, followed by Alissa Niggemann, who crossed the line in 16:45.42 to take third.

Tallying another win for Wisconsin was seven-time All-American senior Georgia Ellenwood, who won the 100 meter hurdles, clocking in with a time of 14.30 seconds. Ellenwood also took third in the 200 meters in 24.82, just barely missing her personal best time.

Gabby DesRosiers won the 200 meters with a personal best time of 24.57. The sophomore was also on the winning 4x100 relay team alongside Meagan Blair, Brenna Detra and Hannah Wilson finishing in 46.96 seconds.

Freshman Hannah Wilson captured a victory in the 100 meters, sprinting across the line in 12.11 while fellow freshman Bianca Stubler was second in the 800 meters in 2:12.79.

In her first meet since last outdoor season, Brenna Detra finished strong with a second-place finish in the 400 hurdles in 1:01.34.

Wisconsin also put up big marks in the discus throw as freshman Josie Schaefer finished runner-up with a toss measuring 170-10 (52.07m) that ranks fourth all-time at UW. Hanna Barton unleashed a personal-best throw of 168-1 (52.24m), which ranks fifth on Wisconsin's all-time list, to finish third.

In the shot put, Banke Oginni was the runner-up with a personal best throw of 51-7 (15.72m) while Schaefer finished third with 48-5 1/2 (14.77m) in her UW track and field debut.

Haley Showalter finished fourth in the hammer throw with a toss measuring 194-9 (59.38m).

Taylor Amann cleared a height of 12-7 1/2 (3.85m) to take the runner-up spot in the pole vault, while teammates Rayce Albino and Jane McCurry came in just behind her in third and fourth, respectively. Albino also cleared 12-7 1/2 (3.85m) to take third, and McCurry came in with a mark of 12-1 1/2 (3.70m) to finish fourth in the event.
