UW battles, drops 4-3 match to Penn State
MADISON, Wis. – With one of the largest crowds of the season on hand to take in Friday evening's match against Penn State, the Wisconsin women's tennis team was one match away from a win before Penn State's snatched away a 4-3 decision.
Â
Up 3-2, sophomore Michelle Linden and freshman MaryAnn Rompf were the last two matches of the night for Wisconsin. Linden led 6-3, 2-6, 5-4 before Hannah Wikberg's comeback, which knotted the match up at 3-3.
Â
Not long after, Rompf fell and Penn State (2-4 Big Ten, 7-10 overall) left Madison with a 4-3 victory. The Badgers (2-4, 8-10) have now lost the last six matches against the Nittany Lions.
Â
Freshman Lexi Keberle, junior Sara Castellano and sophomore Melissa Pick grabbed the Badgers' three points on the evening. After being down 1-0 following doubles play, Keberle and Castellano finished back-to-back, propelling Wisconsin to a 2-1 lead.
Â
Facing a powerful Buckeyes team on Sunday, UW will need the support and energy from Friday's match in order to end the home season on a high note.
Â
Up next: UW closes out the home season with Senior Day on Sunday, April 8 against No. 30 Ohio State at Noon (CT). Prior to the match, the Badgers will honor senior Kelsey Grambeau.
