Badgers finding success on summer circuit
MADISON, Wis. -- There's plenty of reason for optimism around the Wisconsin men's golf team recently. The Badgers return the majority of their lineup from last year, a team whose season scoring average was fourth-best in school history. And if the start to the summer circuit is any indication, UW is poised to make some noise next season.
Senior Jordan Hahn is the most accomplished of Wisconsin's returnees and his summer is off to a great start. He tied for fourth place with a 2-under par total at U.S. Open Qualifying at Thuderhawk Golf Club on May 17. That finish advanced him to US Open sectional qualifying in Springfield, Ohio. There, Hahn tied for 24th out of 65 players (T9th among amateurs), just six strokes off the qualifying score.
This past weekend, June 13-16, Hahn spent the majority of the four rounds at the Southwestern Amateur near the top of the leaderboard. His 10-under total of 270 was good for third place in the prestigious tournament. Now in its 103rd year, the Southwestern Amateur boasts past champions like Mark O'Meara (1980), Corey Pavin (1981), Ryan Palmer (1999) and Nick Watney (2002).
Junior Pete Kuhl got a taste of the winner's circle at the Illinois State Amateur Championship Qualifier at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron, Ill., on June 7. He tied for first to advance to the Illinois State Amateur Championship (July 17-19).
Sophomore Griffin Barela played with the pros on June 13-16, taking part in the Prairie Band Topeka Championship on the APT Tour. Barela tied for 14th in the 130-player field, finishing as the low amateur after shooting a 5-under total of 283. The APT Tour partners with local non-profits to conduct professional golf tournaments in the mid-south region of the U.S. APT has successfully graduated players to the PGA Tour. They include PGA Tour winners Mark Hensby, J.L. Lewis, Tim Herron, Cameron Beckman, Bubba Watson, and Ryan Palmer.
The summer success has not been contained to current Badgers. Incoming freshman Cameron Frazier won the 2018 Ohio Junior Golf Championship over the weekend, with his two-round total of 140 giving him a two stroke cushion over the runner up. Frazier heads to Madison after being named the Division I state player of the year by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
