Wisconsin looks to build off stellar summer play
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's golf team opens the 2018-19 season Sep. 9 by hosting the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course. After some great individual performances this summer, Wisconsin is poised for a successful year. Here's some of what the Badger golfers were up to over the break:
Â
Senior Jordan Hahn:
Hahn continued his dominance into several summer tournaments, including taking first at the 88th Illinois State Amateur Championship in Bloomington last month. Hahn shot a 3-under-par 277 at the 72-hole championship, helping him earn the No. 226 amateur ranking in the world. Hahn also racked in top summer finishes at the Choo Choo Amateur (second) and at the Southwestern Amateur (third). The Wisconsin senior is expected to be a top performer in the Big Ten this season.
Â
Sophomore Griffin Barela
Coming off a breakout freshman season in Madison, Barela continued his stellar play over summer break. The sophomore tied for third at the Colorado Amateur, and grabbed a share of 15th place at the Colorado Open. Barela also had an outstanding performance at the Prairie Band Topeka Championship, a renowned professional event in Mayetta, Kansas, where he tied for 14th place.
Â
Freshman Cameron Frazier:
Wisconsin added a major weapon to their roster when Cameron Frazier decided to join the Badgers last February. The Cincinnati, Ohio native is currently the No. 1 ranked junior player in Ohio. Frazier captured first place at the Ohio Junior Championship in late June. At St. Xavier High School, Frazier led the Bombers to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I state title as a junior and earned co-medalist honors.
Â
Thoughts from Coach Burcin:
"I have never been so proud of a group of guys for their overall summer performance. Jordan has elevated his game and his international rankings are very high. Griffin had opportunities to win two different professional events. They both played great schedules this summer and have become highly regarded nationally."
"Sam Anderson also made some great strides this summer and his game continues to blossom, playing well in state and in a few national events he played in as well. Â To also have Cameron Frazier, the Ohio Junior champion, coming in as a freshman is exciting too. Â Ohio has very strong junior golf and to have one of their top players coming to Madison is a compliment to what the guys already here are building."
"You have to step out of your comfort zone during the summer and test yourself nationally if you really want to gauge where your game is and we have a group of guys who did that and had a high level of success."
