UW makes its first road trip of 2019 indoor season

IOWA CITY, Iowa – After opening its season at home with the Badger Icebreaker, the Wisconsin women's track and field team will hit the road to Iowa City, Iowa for the third-annual Larry Wieczorek Invitational.Â

Hosted by the University of Iowa, the third-annual Larry Wieczorek Invitational is scheduled to begin on Friday at 2 p.m. (CT) with the women's weight throw and running events to begin at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, the action will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's shot put.

1. BACK IN ACTION:Â The Badgers opened their season with 12 victories at the Badger Icebreaker last Saturday at The Shell. Banke Oginni won both the shot put and weight throw while Alicia Monson ran a top-10 time in school history in the mile. In addition, Gabby DesRosiers broke the Shell record for the 300 meters.
2. B1G HONOR FOR BANKE: Track season just started last weekend but Banke Oginni is already earning incredible honors. She was named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week after winning both the shot put and weight throw at the Badger Icebreaker. The senior not only leads the conference in the weight throw, but her season-best toss of 71-1 1/2 ranks third in the country. She also ranks sixth in the Big Ten in the shot put and 18th nationally with a mark of 52-7 1/4.
3. MAGNIFICENT MILERS: Cross country season may have ended, but the Badger distance runners are still putting in work. After the Badger Icebreaker, three Wisconsin runners have three of the top six mile runners in the NCAA. Alicia Monson has the best mile mark in the NCAA with 4:36.05, Alissa Niggemann has the fifth-best time at 4:42.85. Amy Davis is sixth with a mile time of 4:45.28.
4. ABOUT THE MEET: The Wisconsin track team is on the road this weekend in Iowa for the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. The Badgers will be competing against Arizona, Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Missouri, and Purdue and the meet can be seen live on FloTrack.
5. NEXT IS INDIANA: Following the Larry Wieczorek Invitational, the Badgers will hit the road again and compete at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington. The Indiana Relays will take place at the Gladstein Fieldhouse from Friday, January 25 through Saturday, January 26.
