
Badgers off to a strong start at Larry Wieczorek Invite

UW sprinters and field athletes shine on first day of competition in Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The first road meet of the season is turning out to be successful for the Wisconsin men's track and field team, with various athletes earning personal bests and with its younger members putting up dynamic performances on the track and in the field.
Rashid Coulibaly started things off for Wisconsin, taking third in the pole vault. Coulibaly vaulted a personal best of 17 feet, 2 3/4 inches to secure his third-place finish.
Stacey Boyd II, a freshman sprinter from Tempe, Arizona, put up another big performance at Friday's competition, finishing third overall in the 200 meters in 21.95.
Fellow freshman Colin Enz also impressed, winning his heat of the 600 meters in 1:21.28 to finish ninth in the overall standings. Lodi, Wis, native Robby Hatch crossed the line of the 600 meters in 1:22.49.
Competing in the 600 meters premier race was senior Eric Brown, who finished fourth in his heat with a time of 1:19.97.
In the high jump, the Badgers finished with two athletes in the top-five. George Ghafari finished fourth overall with a season-best clearance of 6-8 3/4 while teammate Zach Dybul took fifth, clearing the same height.
In the throwing ring, Tucker Wedig took fourth overall in the weight throw with a toss measuring 66-4.
Five Badgers also competed in the long jump, all finishing within the top-15. Zach Lorbeck led UW with a fifth place finish, jumping 23-2 1/4. Next for Wisconsin were Paul Afflitto, who took ninth in 22-10 and Trent Nytes, taking tenth with a mark of 22-4 1/2. Freshman Peyton Frankenreider also competed in the long jump, earning a mark of 21-8 3/4 while teammate Travis Toliver jumped a personal best distance of 20-9 1/4.
The Larry Wieczorek Invitational will continue on Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT) with the women's shot put and running events at 2:30 p.m.
