Wisconsin heads to Iowa City for first road meet of the season

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Following a successful season opener at the Badger Icebreaker in which Wisconsin edged both UW-Milwaukee and DePaul, UW will gear up for the first road meet of the season this weekend.

Hosted by the University of Iowa, the third-annual Larry Wieczorek Invitational is scheduled to begin on Friday at 2 p.m. (CT) with the women's weight throw and running events to begin at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, the action will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's shot put.

1. OFF TO A STRONG START: Wisconsin won its home opener meet for the second time in three years, tallying 165 points to best UW-Milwaukee (158) and DePaul (101). Seven Badgers earned individual titles and various UW athletes earned personal bests in the season-opener.Â
2. FRESHMAN FURY: The newer members of the track and field team showed their talents at the Badger Icebreaker, with three freshmen winning individual titles. Stoughton, Wisconsin, native Sam McHone won the long jump while teammate Stacey Boyd II earned victories in the 60 meters and the 300 meters.Â
Other freshmen who competed at the season-opener included Colin Enz and Rhys Koch, who finished second and third, respectively, in the 600 meters. Fellow middle-distance freshmen Alex Jansen and Liam Belson also competed, both running the 800 meters and as members of the 4x400 relay. Peyton Frankenreider also made his UW debut, qualifying for the 60 meter hurdles finals, where he took fourth overall.

3. LAST YEAR AT LARRY: This year's invitational marks the second-straight year that Wisconsin has competed at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. At last year's meet, three Badgers recorded victories on the track and in the pole vault. Corbin Ellis took home the gold in the 400 meters while Zack Benning earned a huge win in the 3000 meters, besting his previous personal best time by 16 seconds. Wisconsin also swept the pole vault event, with Rashid Coulibaly taking first and teammate Tim Guthrie finishing runner-up.Â
4. TOUGH COMPETITION: Wisconsin will face eight collegiate teams this weekend in Iowa City, including Arizona, Baylor, Iowa State, Missouri and Big Ten rivals Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Purdue. In addition to the teams competing, the Larry Wieczorek Invitational will also feature non-collegiate competitors and premier events for qualifying athletes.Â
5. NEXT IS INDIANA: Following the Larry Wieczorek Invitational, the Badgers will hit the road again and compete at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington. The Indiana Relays will take place at the Gladstein Fieldhouse from Friday, January 25 through Saturday, January 26.
