BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior Olli Hoare ended his track campaign last year in the very best way by winning the 1500 meters in upset fashion at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Hoare returned to the track on Saturday for the 2019 season and delivered a huge performance in the 3000 meters, smashing the school record and running the No. 2 time in the world this season.
The four-time All-American finished the 3000 meter race in 7 minutes, 48.81 seconds, breaking the previous school record set by Craig Miller in 2010 by over a full second. Hoare's time also currently leads the NCAA and ranks No. 2 in the world.
Olin Hacker, Ben Eidenschink and
Tyson Miehe also competed in the event on Saturday. Hacker finished fourth overall with a personal best sub-eight minute time of 7:56.07. That time ranks fourth in the country. Eidenschink also earned a personal best in the event, crossing the line in 8:09.70 while Miehe came through with a time of 8:22.17.
Also competing in a distance event on the track was
Tannor Wagner, who took 12th in the mile with a time of 4:11.66.
UW's middle distance athletes continued to shine on the track, with three of its competitors in the 800 meters finishing within the top-10.
Eric Brown led the way, finishing third with a time of 1:50.28 while teammates
Hudson Kugel and
Austin Rendon finished just beind him in fourth and sixth, respectively. Kugel came through with a personal best time of 1:50.49 and Rendon earned a time of 1:51.29.
Freshmen
Liam Belson and
Alex Jansen also competed in the 800 meters. Belson came through with a time of 1:58.11 while Jansen crossed the line in 2:00.11.
Three Badgers qualified for the final heat of their events, including freshmen
Stacey Boyd II and
Peyton Frankenreider. In the final heat of the 60 meter dash, Boyd II took eighth overall with a time of 7.05 while Frankenreider took a seventh place finish in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles in 8.48. Redshirt junior
Zach Lorbeck also competed in the final heat of the 60 meter hurdles, taking eighth with a time of 8.50.
Boyd II also competed in the 400 meters alongside fellow freshman
Colin Enz. The Tempe, Arizona, native took seventh overall in the finals with a time of 49.59 while Enz finished eighth with a personal best time of 49.87.
In the field, the Badgers took a 2-3-4 finish in the high jump. UW was led by redshirt senior
Trent Nytes, who was the runner-up with a clearance of 6-7 1/2.
Zach Lorbeck took third with a mark of 6-6 while teammate
Paul Afflitto finished fourth overall, clearing the bar set at 6-2 1/4.
Capping off the day for Wisconsin were the 4x400 relay squads. The Wisconsin "A" team of

Colin Enz took a third place overall finish with a time of 3:16.38 while the Wisconsin "B" relay featuring
Austin Rendon,
Hudson Kugel,
Sam McHone and
Rhys Koch took ninth overall in 3:21.15.
Up next, the Badgers are headed to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the Power Five Invitational. The two-day meet is scheduled to begin on Friday, February 1 and run through Saturday, February 2.
