Hoare secures silver at Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational

Badgers take home eighth at premier home meet

MADISON, Wis. - The 19th-ranked Wisconsin men's cross-country team competed on their home course this Friday for the 11th-annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.

Senior Olli Hoare had an impressive finish in his last Nuttycombe Invitational. At the 6000-meter mark, Hoare was in seventh place but over the last 2,000 meters, the Sydney, Australia, native continued to move up. Over the final 100 meters, Hoare used his speed to finish second in 23 minutes, 39.1 seconds. Iowa State's Edwin Kurgat ran away from the field to win in 23:29.4.

Senior Olin Hacker was the second Badger to cross the finish line, coming in at 48th place with a time of 24:15.9. Senior Ben Eidenschink came in shortly behind Hacker, placing 53rd with a time of 24:19.1. Also running for the Badgers were Shuaib Aljabaly (94th in 24:36.2), Jackson Sharp (95th in 24:26.3), Zack Snider (137th in 24:53.1), and Seth Hirsch (153rd in 25:00.2).

The Badgers finished the men's championship race in eighth place with a score of 292. Top-ranked Northern Arizona won its fourth-straight team title with 59 points while fifth-ranked Stanford finished second with 133 points.

Freshman Conor Perreault led the Badgers in the men's 'B' race, finishing 13th overall with a time of 24:47.8.

Straight from the course

"You would hope that they certainly know every blade of grass on this course. This is our home course, that certainly helps. You hope that after the mistakes we made at the start of the first kilometer at Notre Dame we weren't going to do that again. I don't think we did, we got out a lot better, but we settled down too much. We always look at each race as an opportunity and I think we took advantage of the opportunity presented to us today. We did a lot better than Notre Dame, but we still have two weeks to go until conference meet. Right now we have a lot of teams ahead of us, we have to do better and I expect them to be better in two weeks.

"Conference meet is completely different than this, there is more head-to-head competition. I'm looking forward to that. We're going to have to cut back on our miles and start getting our legs under us. We need to tighten up. We still have more to do in the next two weeks, but we're excited about our next opportunity. It's a conference meet and we always say that this is our conference. Next two weeks we have plenty of time to recover from this and prepare for Nov. 3 in Columbus, Ohio."

"I wanted to finish up on the lower end. This was my last Nuttycombe race on this course and this meet is very special to us. I really wanted to try and do justice for... I mean Morgan winning last year. I really went out and tried to keep myself as comfortable as possible and stay in it. I really started to push up on that last two kilometers and it was hurting, but it was nice to get there and take out second so I'm pretty happy about that."
