MADISON, Wis. - The seventh-ranked women and the ninth-ranked men's cross country teams both earned at-large spots to compete in the NCAA Championship races on Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana. The women's 6K race takes off at 10:15 a.m. CT with the men's 10K race to follow at 11:15 a.m. CT.
Wisconsin was one of 13 at-large teams in both races that were chosen on Saturday by the NCAA Division I Cross Country Subcommittee. The top-two teams in each of nine regionals earned automatic bids to the national meet. The UW women finished third in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course on Friday while the men finished fifth.
This will be the men's 57th time competing at the national championship race in program history and their 45th time in 48 years. The last time the men captured a team title was in 2011 under head coach Mick Byrne. Mohammed Ahmed ran to an amazing fifth-place finish, one of all UW scorers to place top-35, and record 97 points. This created a 42-point deficit over runner-up Oklahoma State. The win was the fifth time in program history that Wisconsin had won a team title at the National Championship.
The Badgers finished eighth at the 2018 NCAA Championship on their home course behind individual championship Morgan McDonald. McDonald won the 10K race in a time of 29 minutes, 8.3 seconds. Before McDonald, Simon Bairu won the individual title for Wisconsin consecutively in 2004 and 2005 .

This will be the 30th time in program history that the women will compete in the NCAA Championships. The women won consecutive titles in 1984 and 1985, and were runners-up in 1986 under coach Peter Tegan. The Badgers have three individual national champions with Erica Palmer taking home Wisconsin's most recent individual title with a time of 16 minutes, 39.5 seconds in 1999.
