Badgers triumph over Panthers in their return to the Kohl
MADISON, WIS. - The Badgers returned home looking to land back on top after falling to Colorado last Thursday.
The determination showed as Wisconsin took Milwaukee down 71-40, putting the first points on the board and never once trailing.
The boards are getting to know Imani Lewis well. She put up 19 points to lead the Badgers, scoring on three consecutive possessions and going five for five from the free-throw line. She also was one of two players to secure five rebounds, Julie Pospisilova being the other.
Teamed up, Lewis and Abby Laszewski are a familiar pair of leaders. Laszewski was second for the Badgers in scoring, laying down 13 points and four rebounds.
Sara Stapleton and Alex Luehring both went two for two from behind the free-throw line, and Kendra Van Leeuwen dished out six assists.
Head Coach Jonathan Tsipis credits the team's success to defense. Milwaukee came into Sunday's game having shot double-digit threes in their last two games. Wisconsin held them to two. "We never let them get a chance to really get started and did a lot better on the glass tonight, which helped us," Tsipis said.
Tsipis also noted the team's ability to share the ball well, "Just really unselfish play from everyone, and I'm proud of our group as a whole," he said.
Walk-on Sydney Mathiason wrapped up the game for the Badgers, scoring two to send the team 31 points over Milwaukee. Togetherness is what kept the team going.
"This in-state rivalry game really pumped us up. We did not want to lose to them on our home floor," Lewis said. "I felt like everybody really came together."
Wisconsin takes a quick breather this week, but the team will be back at the Kohl Center on Nov. 26 to host Eastern Illinois.
