Badgers named Coach of the Year; Freshman of the Year
MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne was named Big Ten Conference Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second year in a row, the Big Ten office announced on Wednesday. In addition, UW's Jackson Sharp was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
Byrne led the Badgers to their 50th Big Ten team title this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio. Senior Olli Hoare led the way for the Badgers, winning the men's 8K race, making it his sixth Big Ten title.
The Badgers scored 56 points, creating a 14-point margin over runner-up Indiana. This was possible by having five Badgers place top-20. UW leads the Big Ten with the most team titles, more than all of the other schools combined. Indiana and and Michigan State come in at second with both schools recording 14 titles.
Byrne has now recorded nine Big Ten titles in his coaching career at Wisconsin. He is ranked third in conference history behind Martin Smith (12) and Jerry Schumacher (11) of Wisconsin.
This is Byrne's ninth time being named the Big Ten Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year and his 26th men's cross country conference coach of the year award in his time as a collegiate coach.
In addition, Wentworth Falls, Australia native Sharp was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Sharp finished 15th overall and fourth for the Badgers at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 24 minutes, 23.7 seconds in the 8K race. He was the first freshman to finish the race, 21 places ahead of the next freshman.
Sophomores Shuaib Aljabaly and Lucinda Crouch were both named Big Ten Sportsmanship honorees.
The Big Ten Athlete of the Year will be announced on Nov 26, following the NCAA Championships, which will be contested on Nov. 23 at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
