Wisconsin’s junior takes fourth place at Senior Nationals to qualify
FORT WORTH, Texas – After competing for the Badgers on Thursday, Evan Wick took the first flight down to Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday to compete at the Senior Nationals for a chance to compete at the USA Olympic Team Trials in April.
Wick, the tournament's No. 11 seed in the 74-kilogram weight class, started off with a technical win over Deondre Wilson with a score of 12-2.
Wick's next test came against Nick Becker, his training partner at Titan Mercury Wrestling Club. Wick took a last-second victory over Becker in a 14-11 decision.
After a 10-4 loss to Tommy Gantt, Wick cruised through the consolation bracket. Needing to place in the top five to qualify for the trials, Wick took a pair of technical wins against Jake Suelfohn and Joey Lavellee.
To secure a qualifying spot, Wick defeated Nazar Kulchytskyy in a 4-2 decision. After already qualifying for a spot in the trials, Wick forfeited to Gantt to take fourth place in the tournament.
Wick is the second current Badger to qualify for team trials, after Seth Gross won the Bill Farrell tournament in November. The trials will be held on April 4-5 at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania.
