Five Badgers claw their way to individual titles

Barnett, Gross, Moran, Wick and Hillger lead way at Cougar Clash

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Badger wrestling team bounced back in a big way at the Cougar Clash, winning five individual titles and a second-place team finish.

No. 10 Tristan Moran had a big day in Edwardsville. The 141-pounder's day started with a pin over Brown's Sam Lynch. His opponent was nailed to the mat in just one minute, 39 seconds, Moran's fastest pin of the year. After taking a 7-2 decision from SIUE's Saul Ervin, Moran faced his toughest challenge of the day, No. 5 Grant Leeth out of Missouri. It was a close battle that came down to the very last second, ending in a clutch takedown with Moran taking first place at the tournament.

No. 3 Evan Wick was wicked good at the Cougar Clash. Wrestling at 165, Wick recorded a technical fall over Little Rock's Tristan Tadeo, ending the match in just 3:35, which would prove to be the longest Evan spent on the mat all day. Wick went on to pin his next two opponents. Missouri's Peyton Mocco went down at 1:18 and Drew Hughes of Michigan State was done in the championship round in 1:07.

Eric Barnett saw his first action in a Badger singlet at the Cougar Clash and it was a victorious one. Barnett took first place at 125-pounds, claiming a major decision victory and back to back decisions to close out the weight class.

Seth Gross and Trent Hillger each ended their match before time was up. Gross, the star 133-pounder, pinned Honor Nguyen from SIUE in just 1:05 on his way to a championship. Trent Hillger, Wisconsin's standout heavyweight, recorded a technical fall in the finals over Christian Rebottaro from Michigan State with a final score of 20-5.

Straight from the mat
"I'm very happy for our guys today, coming back strong after our setback last week. They are a very resilient bunch! I saw a ton of improvement from a mentality standpoint that really fires me up!"
    - Wisconsin head coach, Chris Bono

"It feels really good to be able to bounce back and get a big win! I learned a lot after that last match at Iowa and how I really just need to push the pace more and wrestle my match. Our team is built for tournaments. The longer it goes the better our team gets!"
    - Redshirt senior, Tristan Moran

"It felt good today. I was just focusing on my breathing and staying calm. I felt very relaxed. I think my match with (Iowa's Alex) Marinelli, it was a tough loss, I would have obviously liked to have won. But I think it was good because it just reminded me that I needed to stay calm. I compromise my position sometimes and didn't have that same intensity. I learned a lot from that match and was able to bounce back really well."
    - Redshirt junior, Evan Wick

Notables
    - Taylor Watkins picked up two consecutive wins for Wisconsin today, including his first in a Badger singlet
    - Dan Stilling, true freshman, wrestled at 149 and recorded two pins
    - Wisconsin recorded seven pins at the tournament, including two apiece from Evan Wick and Dan Stilling
