HOUSTON, Texas – On the final day of the Lonestar Collegiate Classic, the Wisconsin softball team shut out Lamar, 8-0, to close out opening weekend with a 4-1 record.
The Badgers used a mix of offensive pop and disciplined defense to blast past the Cardinals for the second time this weekend.
Taylor Johnson got things started in the first inning with a single to left field. The third baseman stole second and third base before
Melanie Cross sent her home with a double to right center.
UW added to its 1-0 lead in the second inning with an unearned run. The Badgers widened the advantage to 4-0 in the third frame when
Sydney Lawson stole two bases en route to picking up UW's third run of the day.
Stephanie Lombardo then scored
Kelly Welsh when she sliced a triple down the left field line.
A pair of doubles upped the lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Johnson and
Kayla Konwent hit back-to-back 2B's, scoring Miklesh and Johnson, respectively.
After a quiet fifth inning, Konwent struck again with a two-run homer in the sixth to give UW an eight run advantage. The Badgers secured their run rule victory with a clean bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore
Haley Hestekin earned the win after pitching four innings with one strikeout and two hits allowed. Junior
Caroline Hedgcock held down the fort during the final two innings, striking out one and walking two, while not allowing a hit.

Next weekend the Badgers travel to Raleigh, North Carolina for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The tournament kicks off on Friday when Wisconsin plays Pitt at 12:30 p.m. (CT).
