No. 2 Badgers opens road series in Duluth with six-goal effort

DULUTH, Minn. – Wisconsin women's hockey senior Emily Clark scored twice as the No. 2 Badgers defeated Minnesota Duluth, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at AMSOIL Arena.

Clark earned her third multi-goal game of the year while Presley Norby, Annie Pankowski, Sam Cogan and Sophie Shirley also scored to help the Badgers (27-4-0, 17-4-0-0) extend their unbeaten streak against the Bulldogs (13-14-2, 9-10-2-2) to 11 games.

Clark put the Badgers up 1-0 early as the Olympian beat UMD goaltender and fellow Olympian Maddie Rooney top shelf 3:44 into the game. It marked Clark's 10th goal of the year as she gave UW a 1-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.

Early in the second period, Norby sent a low shot past Rooney off a feed from Shaver to double the UW advantage.

With 5:58 remaining in the second frame, Clark quick-tapped in her second of the afternoon off a beautiful pass from Pankowski.

Pankowski grabbed a goal of her own minutes later, finishing a breakaway with a five-hole snipe to give UW a 4-0 advantage heading into the third period.

UMD scored early in the third on a redirected puck to make it 4-1 game before UW tacked on two goals in the final stanza.

Shirley scored her 18th of the year seven minutes into the period before Cogan redirected a Shirley shot to round out the scoring with less than three minutes to go in the game.

Three Notes of the Game

  • Junior Kristen Campbell stopped 19 of the 20 shots she faced to earn her NCAA-leading 27th win of the year.

Play of the Game

UW head coach Mark Johnson
On the overall game:

"I thought from start to finish it was one of our stronger games. Talked about getting off to a good start, Clarky scored and gave us a bunch of energy in almost every area. Power play was good, we didn't score enough but we had a lot of good opportunities. It was a good solid game especially being on the road against a good opponent."

On tone being set early and importance of a solid start:
"I think especially if you're on the road and you can score in the first 5-8 minutes of the game you can put them on their heels a little bit. Certainly when (Presley) Norby scored in the second period, I thought the second period we played very well to give us a 2-0 lead. We did a lot of good things today and hopefully we can come back tomorrow and get ready for a push in the first part of the game and get ready to go."
Senior Emily Clark
On great start with a goal three minutes in:

"Anytime you can get up in a game it's definitely an advantage, it's not fun playing from behind. Whether you get a goal in the first period or the second period, as long as we're having good habits in the first and sustaining pressure, that leads to a pretty good game for us."

On playing the Bulldogs:
"Every year I have been here they've been such a great team and they play hard and they have a lot of skills. You want to play your best and you want to play the best so they definitely bring out the best game in us because they're so good. It's just a fun, competitive game anytime we get to play them, and I had ten seconds to play against them last time we played them so it was fun to get the full game in."

Senior Annie Pankowski
On the overall game:

"It's really exciting especially as the season whines down here, you want to keep getting those bounces and everyone gets a little bit of confidence from a game like today. It's just really exciting that it happened against a good team."

On the success of the first line:
"We are playing with our speed and that's too our advantage. The more we can buzz the net and the more we trust each other, the faster we are going to find each other."

On career success against Minnesota Duluth:
"When you play the best teams you always want to play your best. It's not a hard game to get excited about, everyone loves playing her and we love playing Duluth because they are so talented and it just brings out the best in everyone."
