Hot bats propel Badgers to run-rule victory over Villanova

Hedgcock, Lombardo and Little all homer in 13-1 win

CLEARWATER, Fla. – On its final day in Florida, the No. 20 Wisconsin softball team blasted past Villanova, 13-1 in five innings, to finish out non-conference tournament play. The Badgers (21-3) went 4-1 at the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase.

Junior Caroline Hedgcock helped the Badgers set the tone early when she got the Badgers on the board in the first inning. Leadoff batter Kayla Konwent was hit by a pitch. Konwent's runner Gabby Scherle advanced to third when sophomore Taylor Johnson doubled in the next at-bat. That's when Hedgcock sent everybody home with a three-run goner to left center.

The Badgers extended their lead in the bottom of the second via a Kelly Welsh sacrifice bunt. Welsh scored sophomore Lauren Foster to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Wisconsin put the game out of reach with a five-run third inning. Senior Stephanie Lombardo hit a two-run home run that was followed by a Jordan Little two-run blast. Konwent added the fifth run with a double to left center to score freshman Ally Miklesh.

UW's offense continued its magic in the fourth inning with four more runs off six base hits. The Badgers loaded the bases with singles from Little, Jolie Fish and Melanie Cross. Welsh sent the Cross home with an infield base hit and Miklesh followed suit with an RBI single up the middle to score Fish. Konwent capped of the scoring with a base hit to center field that scored Welsh and Little.

Junior Kaitlyn Menz picked up the win in the circle after pitching three shutdown innings. Freshman Maddie Schwartz was solid in relief, pitching the final two innings.

The Badgers are 6-0 this season when Hedgcock homers.
Five Badgers recorded a multiple-hit game, including Konwent (3), Hedgcock (2), Little (2), Welsh (2) and Miklesh (2).
Today's game marks the fourth time this season UW has hit three long balls in a game and its eighth game with multiple home runs.
Wisconsin outhit Villanova 15-5, collecting its most hits in a game so far this season.

On deck

The Badgers will take a week off before traveling to Champaign, Illinois to open the conference season March 22-24.
