Two Badgers take to Austin for national meet
MADISON, Wis. — Two members of the Wisconsin swimming team are slated to swim in this week's NCAA men's championships at the Joe and Lee Jamil Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. Here are five things to know.
1. MJ the Magician: After securing a Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award this season, sophomore MJ Mao is more than ready to compete in the NCAA championships.
The fastest swimmer in UW program history in the 200-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 52.40 seconds), Mao holds the seventh-fastest swim in the Big Ten Conference in that event, and hence qualified for the national meet in the event with his performance at last month's conference championships.
2. Tysoe the Tank: Another Big Ten Swimmer of the Week recipient this season, Cameron Tysoe will enter the NCAA championships on the strength of accruing silver in the 200-yard backstroke (1:41.29) at the Big Ten championships.
Tysoe will now look to recapitalize on his late-season success once again. The junior qualified for the national championships at the Boiler-Make-It Last Chance meet with a time of 1:40:04, the fastest 200 backstroke swim in Badgers history.
3. Meet Minutia: The dynamic duo with both compete Saturday in their respective events. The preliminary session will be streamed live via TexasSports.com beginning at 10 a.m. (CT). The finals session begins at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN3. Live results are available on the schedule page at UWBadgers.com and the Meet Mobile app.
4. Back and Better: It has surely been a surreal season for head coach Yuri Suguiyama, who bore witness to Beata Nelson's unbelievable three-peat (100 back, 200 back, 200 IM) at the NCAA championships last week.
For those efforts, the junior earned CSCAA Swimmer of the Year and Big Ten Swimmer of the Year awards.
Suguiyama — alongside assistant coaches Neil Caskey and Erik Posegay — will now seek further success at the men's meet.
