REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — The No. 14 Wisconsin men's rowing team competed in day one of the two-day Stanford Invitational Saturday in California, sweeping No. 18 Oregon State in the morning heat before being swept by No. 4 California in the afternoon.
The Badgers' first eight narrowly edged Oregon State in the opening race, beating out the Beavers by two seconds to claim UW's first victory. The varsity eight recorded one of its fastest times at the Stanford Invitational, clocking in at 5:41.4.
In similar fashion, the second varsity eight snuck across the finish line three seconds ahead of the Beavers' second crew with a time of five minutes, 56 seconds.
The third varsity completed Wisconsin's sweep of the Beavers with a convincing finish, clocking in 22 seconds before Oregon State with a time of 6:24.1.
Following the morning portion of the regatta, all three Wisconsin crews finished second to the No. 4 Bears.
In Madison, the novice crews hosted Minnesota and Milwaukee School of Engineering at the Porter Boathouse in a morning dual.
Notably, the Badgers finished first in the varsity four 'D' relay with a time of 7:17.9, beating out Minnesota's 'D' and 'E' relays by five seconds and 11 seconds, respectively.
Wisconsin's second varsity eight took the second eight race with a time of 6:29.8, and the Badgers' varsity four took the 'B' relay with a winning time of six minutes and 53 seconds.
Up Next: The Badgers have a few weeks off before traveling east to Boston to take on Holy Cross and No. 6 Northeastern for rights to the Congram Cup.

On the races overall:
"It was a good morning for us. We managed to win in the three, in the second varsity and in the first varsity. It's been a real odd start to the season for us. I'm pleased how well they responded from last Saturday. That was, certainly for the one but for the other boats as well, was in no way recognizable compared to last Saturday. It was a completely different animal. We changed the lineups up. We're still in the process. This is just getting going, but they responded really well."
"These were very fast conditions here today, but nonetheless that was the fastest time we've rowed here in at least five or six years. We're light and quick. Cal will be another test, but I don't think there's a lot of pressure on the guys. They're just going to light it up. It was a good start."
On racing against Cal:
"Our guys rowed tight, which is unfortunate only in that they had a free shot at one of the best teams in the country and no one is expecting too much so go for it. They'll come back strong tomorrow. I think we're well matched against Stanford. Our only problem again is our conditioning and our training. It should be fairly close."
"The 2V needs the most work. They were well back. Of all the boats that has the most young guys. There are three sophomores and a freshman in there and they rowed like that. They'll have a much better race tomorrow. It should be well-matched with Stanford."
"The 3V was the first boat I've seen here in a while to do exactly what we used to do on a regular basis. They were ahead of Cal for almost 1000 meters, and only finished three and a half seconds back. That's great to see from the younger ranks, guys coming on up. We haven't seen that in a long time here, and that's great to see. They had a really wonderful attack and were just loose as a goose. It was very un-self conscious row. They went out and did it."
On the weekend:
"This is so valuable, this racing. It's three races in 24 hours, so over an eight day period we have four races, and man do we need it. Then we have a three-week break until we go back to Boston to race Holy Cross and Northeastern. We're going to need every second of that. Hopefully we're represent well there."
