Badgers fall to Gophers in Border Battle doubleheader
April 24, 2019 | Softball
MADISON, Wis. — The No. 25 Wisconsin softball team dropped both games of a Border Battle doubleheader to the surging No. 11 Minnesota Gophers. The Badgers lost the first game of the series 8-2 and put up a good fight in game two but were unable to secure a win, falling 10-3.
Game One
Minnesota came out swinging in game one, scoring in the first inning.
The Badgers would rally back in the second inning to equalize it with a double from freshman Ally Miklesh sending fellow freshman Jolie Fish home.
Minnesota wasted no time pulling back ahead with three runs in the third and capping it off with four runs in the fifth.
Going into the seventh inning trailing 8-1, the Badgers made a late push. Senior Kelly Welsh started it off, getting to first base off of a Minnesota error. Miklesh continued the play by getting Welsh to second base. Junior Kayla Konwent pulled off a hit hard and low to left field, sending Welsh home. Despite this last effort, the Badgers fell in game one, 8-2.
Game Two
Wisconsin would regain its momentum again, but not until the third inning. Minnesota scored quickly in the first inning, putting the Badgers down 1-0.
In the third, Wisconsin found its swing and broke the game open. Konwent smashed a ball to far center field sending Miklesh sliding home to tie the game. Subsequently, sophomore Taylor Johnson hit a through ball towards left field, allowing Konwent to find home. A grounded loose ball from Minnesota then allowed Johnson to run home, giving the Badgers a 3-1 lead.
However, this lead would not hold, as Minnesota would score three runs in the fifth inning and a grand slam in the sixth inning, making the final score 10-3.
On Deck
The Badgers will next travel to West Lafayette to face Purdue on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is at 5 pm on Friday.
