Business trip: UW takes care of business in Princeton

All UW crews grab second-place finishes

PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 12 Wisconsin women's rowing took care of business early Saturday morning at Lake Carnegie to round out the regular season. UW secured second-place finishes across the board against No. 7 Princeton, No. 14 Rutgers and Columbia.

The varsity fours kick-started racing and UW snagged a second-place finish (7:21.9) behind Big Ten opponent, Rutgers (7:19.4), but crossed the finish line ahead of Princeton (7:28.6) and Columbia (7:51.7).

Wisconsin's varsity eight, ranked as the No. 15 varsity eight in the nation according to one statistical measure, was on deck next. After No. 3 Princeton got out ahead early, the Badgers held on to their pace and the margin, never letting the Tigers get too far ahead. The Badgers (6:23.2) finished second behind Princeton (6:20.1) while defeating the No. 8 Rutgers varsity eight (6:26.7) and Columbia (6:42.4).

UW's second varsity eight did not disappoint as they too crossed the finish line in second behind Princeton. Columbia made a move to come even with the Badgers, but Wisconsin was not going to let that happen as it pulled away to secure the second-place finish. Princeton crossed the 2000-meter finish line in first place (6:50.2), followed by the Badgers (6:55.5), with Columbia shortly behind (6:57.7). Rutgers raced to the line in 7:05.8.

On overall racing
"We got three good races off today, so it was a great day overall day for racing. Conditions were good even though it was gusty and windy.

"I think the theme of the day was that we were pretty consistent in our racing, especially our varsity eight. They had a good performance and I think they were able to carry out the things were have been working on and race really well. It also gave us good information to work on in the next couple of weeks getting ready for Big Tens.

"The second varsity eight raced hard, but they let the excitement of the race get to them a little bit, which is another great learning opportunity.

"We had a new lineup in the four. It was probably only their second or third row together, so we were really happy with the way they threw it down. Now we just have to work on a little bit of finesse.

"Overall it was a good day for the Badgers, we represented well and we competed well. We are really excited to be home in Wisconsin and hosting the Big Ten Championships and bringing our very best to that regatta."
