Badgers force game seven with upset of No. 1 Oklahoma
NORMAN, Okla. – The Wisconsin softball team put up quite a fight on the final day of NCAA regional play, beating No. 1 Oklahoma, 2-1, in game six to force a game seven against the Sooners. OU took the final game of the day 2-0 in a thrilling end to one of the best seasons in Wisconsin softball history.
Â
GAME ONE
After giving up a leadoff home run to the Sooners, an all-out team effort led to the biggest upset in recent history when Wisconsin defeated the top-seeded Sooners, 2-1.
Â
The Badgers broke through in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead from the home team. Sophomore Taylor Johnson started the frame with a four-pitch walk and was joined on the base path by Lauren Foster when she was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base after a wild pitch for Badgers on second and third with only one out.
Â
Junior Caroline Hedgcock put down a perfect bunt for a squeeze play to score Johnson. With runners on the corner, freshman Jolie Fish laid down another sacrifice bunt that scored Foster and gave Wisconsin a lead they would never relinquish.
Â
Pitcher Kaitlyn Menz earned the win after pitching the complete seven innings. The junior limited the Sooners to five hits and three walks while striking out five.
Â
The Badgers have only taken down a top-ranked opponent one other time in school history and ended OU's 41-game winning streak to cap off one of the most historic season in school history.
Â
GAME TWO
Wisconsin played Oklahoma tough again in game seven of the Norman regional, but were unable to string together a series of hits to get on the board.
Â
Menz went another complete seven innings with spectacular numbers against the most potent offense in the country. She tallied three strikeouts with only four hits and and one walk to cap off a spectacular weekend in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Ultimately, Oklahoma was able to notch a run in both the third and fourth innings for a third for a slim 2-0 advantage.
