Badgers compete in final races ahead of Eastern Sprints
MADISON, Wis. —  The No. 14 Wisconsin men's rowing team is back in action this weekend after a two-week break following a weekend of competition at the Stanford Invitational. The Badgers travel to Boston for a Saturday-Sunday dual meet against Holy Cross and No. 6 Northeastern on the Charles River.
This weekend marks the final weekend of racing before the 2019 Eastern Sprints, which are set to be held on May 19 in Worcester, Massachusetts.
ABOUT THE RACES:Â The Badgers will face Holy Cross on Saturday before taking on the Huskies on Sunday. This weekend's matchup against Northeastern marks the seventh annual race for rights to the Congram Cup, named after longtime Northeastern head coach Buzz Congram. The Badgers hope to claim their first cup since its inception in 2013.
LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers enjoyed a weekend of racing in Redwood City, California at the Stanford Invitational, facing some of the country's top talent, including No. 4 California. Despite falling to the Bears, Wisconsin captured a sweep of No. 18 Oregon State and claimed  two of three races against host team and No. 11 Stanford.
RANKED: The Badgers maintained their No. 14 ranking in the latest IRA/USRowing Varsity Eight Coaches' Poll this week. Yale and Washington continue to command the top two spots, respectively. UW's matchup against the No. 6 Huskies this weekend marks its fifth race against a ranked team this season. The Badgers are 1-3-0 against ranked foes this spring.Â
EASTERN SPRINTS: In two weeks, the Badgers travel to Worcester, Massachusetts in search of their fourth varsity eight crown at the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) championships. Last year on Lake Quinsigamond, the Badgers' varsity eight placed 11th overall while the fifth varsity eight defended its 2017 title in the event, edging second-place finisher Princeton by six hundredths of a second to claim victory.Â
Following the regatta, the Badgers hope to earn a spot at the 2019 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships taking place May 31-June 2 in Sacramento, California.
