Konwent named Big Ten Player of the Year and USA Softball Top 10 Player of the Year
MADISON, Wis. – After one of the best seasons in program history, the Wisconsin softball team is being recognized for it's efforts. Four Badgers received Big Ten honors for the 2019 season, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon. USA Softball also released its top-10 finalists for Player of the Year, a distinguished honor featuring one of Wisconsin's own.
Junior Kayla Konwent was named Big Ten Player of the Year and is also a unanimous member of the All-Big Ten first team. Konwent became the first Badger in school history to be awarded this prestigious title, and it is well deserved. The Salem, Wisconsin native led the league in batting average (.479), slugging percentage (.918) and on base percentage (.600). The super slugger also finished third nationally in batting average and set single-season school records for home runs and total bases.
Along with her conference accolades, Konwent also earned a spot on USA Softball's top 10 list of finalists for Player of the Year, the organization announced Wednesday.
Sophomore Taylor Johnson also was a first team All-Big Ten selection. The catcher recorded the team's longest hitting and reached base streaks of the season, while also tallying 16 multiple hit games and 10 multiple RBI games. Her impact goes well beyond the stat lines, though. Her role as a vocal leader behind the plate has been just as important to UW's success this season. Johnson is earning her second Big Ten honor after being named to the All-Freshman team last season.
After earning All-Big Ten second team honors as a freshman and All-defensive team accolades as a sophomore, junior pitcher Kaitlyn Menz drew a spot on the All-Big Ten second team thanks to her outstanding abilities in the circle. The sophomore finished the season with a 2.04 ERA, 17 wins, three shutouts and three saves.
Angela Morrow was chosen for the Sportsmanship Award, which is given to student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Morrow has been the definition of a great teammate during her time at Wisconsin and has defined what it means to exemplify sportsmanship.
