Badgers posting best races of the year on penultimate day of the season

GOLD RIVER, Calif. –  With results eerily similar to their women's counterparts at the NCAA championships, the No. 17 Wisconsin men's rowing team saw two crews win C/D semifinals on Saturday at the 2019 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships. Racing took place on Lake Natoma.

It was the third varsity eight, however, that raced in an A/B semifinal, but the Badgers crew finished sixth and will compete in Sunday's petite final for places 7-12.

In the varsity eight competition, UW's top boat won its C/D semifinal, edging No. 12 Navy at the 2000-meter finish line by less than 0.1 seconds. The Badgers also beat out No 15 Columbia by just over a second, but all three crews will race again in tomorrow's C final for places 13-18.

The second varsity eight also won its C/D semi, taking out West Coast crews from Oregon State, Stanford and UC-San Diego, as well as Georgetown in the event. They are on to Sunday's C final.
The varsity four had the day off, but is set to race in Sunday's C final.

Head Coach Chris Clark

"Another good day. Had three races in the eights and everybody rowed at least as well as we wanted to, if not better.

On the third varsity eight
"This is a very lane-oriented place, especially when they have water flowing at a higher rate than normal. Out in lane 6, you don't have much chance, but the third varsity eight really went for it in the semifinal. They'll be in the petite final for places 7-12. I was impressed by their performance. A bunch of young guys there.

On the varsity eight and second varsity eight peaking
The varsity eight and the second varsity eight, for the first time all year, led wire-to-wire and won their C/D semi to qualify for 13th through 18th place. It was great. The just keep getting better every race.

"We are not a very physical team, but the one thing you can do is execute and rise in terms of racing. That's the one thing you can control, if not sheer power, and they're doing it.

"We'll see what happens tomorrow. We'll have lane 1, which is helpful, in both the 1 and the 2."

On the varsity four
"We have the four, as well, going tomorrow. We've got a sophomore stroke, a senior in the bow and two freshmen. They've already done better than I thought they would do, going for 13th-19th tomorrow.

"The last day of the season coming up. Pretty much everything that could go wrong, did go wrong this year from spring break on: injuries, illness, terrible water. In the fall, even, it was flooded on Lake Mendota. Finally, it is all coming together in the last 72 hours. That is extremely gratifying."
