Heiligenthal breaks meet record to lead the way for the Badgers

IOWA CITY, Iowa  – The No. 25 Wisconsin women's track and field team began its weekend in Iowa City at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday morning. True freshman Victoria Heiligenthal lead the way for the Badgers, breaking the meet record in the 3000 meters. Sophomore Madison Mooney also won the 1000-meter run and junior Josie Schaefer won the shot put for Wisconsin.Â
Ten Badgers took the track for the Badgers in 3000-meter run. Heiligenthal chased down Winrose Chesang of Iowa State to finish first with a time of 9 minutes, 55.01 seconds. Both runners finished with record breaking times with Heilgenthal taking control and breaking the meet record by two seconds. Ann Heurman rounded out the top three finishers with a time of 10:01.68. The top 10 included Kyleigh Edwards, finishing seventh in 10:11.18, Rachiel Werking taking eighth in 10:16.60, Emma Helstrom placing ninth in 10:17.20, and Trista Pringle finishing 10th in 10:17.45.Â
Mooney won the 1,000 meters in 2:47.47 with redshirt senior Liz Bohn finishing 10th in 2:57.90.
Schaefer had a fantastic day, finishing first in the women's shot put with a personal best throw of 54 feet, 1 1/4 inches.Â
In the premier 600 meters, three Badgers competed in an elite field. Gabrielle DeRosier took sixth in 1:33.31, Ali Dorn took eighth in 1:34.32 and Haley Lubow finished 13th in 1:35.47.
In the 200 meter dash, Taylor Gilling took ninth with a time of 25.29.
In the premier section of the weight throw, Olivia Roberts finished fourth with a throw of 53-3 3/4. A top-10 finish for Jordan Hirsbrunner came in the high jump where she cleared 5-5 to finish ninth. The Badgers also placed three athletes in the top 11 of the long jump. Mary Bartelson took eighth with a jump of 18-10 3/4, Meagan Blair followed in ninth, jumping 18-7 3/4, and Armoni Brown finished 11th in 18-5.
The Badgers will continue their opening weekend in Iowa City on Saturday, starting with the women's pole vault at 12 p.m.Â
