Albino, Edwards and Schaefer shine at the Jack Jennett Open

Veteran athletes lead the way for Wisconsin
Cedar Falls, Iowa  – Three members of the No. 25 Wisconsin women's track and field team won events at the Jack Jennett Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday. Josie Schaefer won the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 8 1/4 inches, Phoebe Edwards soared 19-2 1/2 to win the long jump, and Rayce Albino cleared 13-1 1/2 to win the pole vault.
Schaefer has started the season on fire. The junior from Baraboo, Wisconsin, has won the shot put at the first two indoor meets of 2020 season. Last week, she set a personal best in the shot put with a throw of 54-1 1/4, moving her up to third on the Wisconsin all-time indoor performance list. Schaefer sits behind multi-time All-American Banke Oginni and Olympian Kelsey Card on the performance list. Her throw last week currently ranks her 13th in the country and seventh in the Big Ten.Â
Edwards leaped a personal best of 19-2 1/2 to secure the win in the long jump, besting her previos best mark of 18-11 1/4 set two years ago. Jordan Hirsbrunner was not far behind Edwards, placing third with a jump of 18-3 1/4.Â
Senior Rayce Albino cleared 13-1 1/2, a season best by nearly two feet to win the pole vault. Hailey Orlowski and Dailey Albino weren't far behind. Orlowski finished third with a height of 11-7 3/4 and Dailey Albino finished sixth clearing a height of 11-1 3/4 in her first meet of the season.Â
Three Badgers advanced to finals in the 60-meter hurdles. Hirsbrunner placed third with a time of 8.85 seconds, Mackenzie Heyroth finsihed fifth in 9.01 and Edwards did not run in the finals after qualifying with a time of 9.16.Â
Olivia Roberts also competed in the weight throw, finishing eight at 53-3 3/4.
Up next, the Badgers send their sprinters, middle distance and distance runners as well as their horizontal jumpers to the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Indiana, on Jan. 31-Feb. 1. UW's multi-event athletes and vertical jumpers head to the Jack Johnson Classic in Minneapolis on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
