Five things to know: Husky Classic and Music City Challenge

Badgers head to Seattle and Nashville
MADISON, Wis. - The No. 23 Wisconsin women's track and field team separates and travels to two different meets this weekend. Sprinters and field athletes head to Nashville to compete in the Music City Challenge on Friday-Saturday. Select distance athletes head to Seattle to compete in the Husky Classic on Friday-Saturday. Events at the Music City Challenge begin on Friday at 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday. Running begins at the Husky Classic start on Friday at 2 p.m. and on Saturday at 11 a.m.

1. LAST TIME OUT: Wisconsin concluded a memorable three-meet weekend last Saturday. Alicia Monson ran the 3000 meters at the prestigious Millrose Games in New York, finishing sixth in a competitive field with a time of 8 minutes, 53.69 seconds, the fastest time in the NCAA this season. Josie Schaefer threw a personal best of 56 feet, 6 3/4 inches to win the shot put at the Red Hawk Invitational in Ripon, Wisconsin. Destiny Huven continued her break-out freshman season by advancing to the finals in the 60-meter hurdles at the Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana, running a personal best time of 8.40 to finish fourth in the race. Wisconsin's 4x400-meter relay squad consisting of Ali Dorn, Haley Lubow, Gabby DesRosiers and Bianca Stubler placed second with a time of 3:40.82.
2. ANOTHER RECORD SETTING WEEKEND: Schaefer, Huven and the members of the 4x400-meter relay all had near record-setting days at their respective meets last weekend. Schaefer's shot put moved her into second place on UW's all-time indoor performance list. Huven moved into second in the 60-meter hurdles, just .11 seconds off of the school record. The 4x400 relay ranks second on the top indoor performers list, less than two seconds off from the school record.
3. CELEBRATING WOMEN IN SPORTS: Last Wednesday, the Badgers celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day recognizing all 49 of our female student athletes who support one another, break through barriers, change expectations, excel on the track and the classroom but most importantly inspire the younger generations by being leaders that stand for the importance of equal opportunity for all girls and women in sports.
The NCAA covered a video entry of Alicia Monson's letter to the generation of women that ran before us, thanking them for giving female student athletes the opportunity to use their voices and take action. Check out the full video bellow:
4. RANKED BADGERS: The USTFCCCA released week three national and regional coaches poll this week, placing Wisconsin at No. 23 nationally and No. 6 in the Great Lakes Regional. Three Badgers are ranked inside the top 20 in the country for their respective events. Alicia Monson has the fastest time in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:53.69 and is ranked No. 17 in the country for the women's mile with a time of 4:38.13. Josie Schaefer ranks No. 9 in the country for the women's shot put with a throw of 56-6 3/4, improving her personal best by more than four feet this season. Jordan Hirsbrunner ranks No. 15 in the country for the pentathlon with a score of 3,994 points.
5. UP NEXT: Wisconsin's distance medley relay will head back to Notre Dame to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational on Feb. 22. UW Throwers will travel to Milwaukee to compete in the Panther Tune-Up on Feb. 22. These Invitationals will be the last before Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 28-29 in Geneva, Ohio.
