Beata Nelson wins two more medals as Badgers stay towards top of the standings
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Wisconsin women's swimming & diving team followed up a successful first day of the Big Ten Championships with another on Thursday, coming away with a gold and silver medal.
After breaking the Iowa pool record in the 200 IM by nearly three seconds in prelims, senior standout Beata Nelson defended her title in the finals, as her NCAA A Standard qualifying 1:51.66 finish carried her to gold and broke not only her own pool record but also her own Big Ten Championship record.
Sophomore Lillie Hosack joined Nelson on the 200 IM podium, coming in fourth place with a 1:56.81 finish, while her classmate Jenna Silvestri came in 15th with a 1:59.64.
Nelson and Hosack teamed up with junior Kelsi Artim and sophomore Alana Palmer to come away with a silver medal for the Badgers in a school-record-breaking 400 medley relay. The squad raced an NCAA qualifying 3:29.08, dropping over five seconds on their entry time as they were just beat out by Michigan for the gold.
Junior Madison Waechter swam a new career-best 4:43.41 in the 500 free, touching fourth in the B-Final and 12th overall, and in addition to helping the 400 medley relay to silver, Alana Palmer raced a 22.87 in the 50 free, finishing fourth in the C-Final and 20th overall.
