Beata Nelson wins fourth medal, third gold, to keep Wisconsin in top half of standings
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Wisconsin women's swimming & diving team completed its third of four days at the Big Ten Championships on Friday, coming away with another gold at the hands of Beata Nelson.
For the third straight year, Beata Nelson is the Big Ten Champion in the 100 back after racing an A Standard NCAA qualifying 49.85, just shy of the Big Ten and pool records – both broken by Nelson while leading off the 400 medley relay a day ago. Now with three golds in three days, Nelson will go for her fourth as she looks to defend her title in the 200 back on Saturday.
In the final race of the night, Nelson joined sophomore Lillie Hosack, senior Megan Doty and sophomore Alana Palmer in the 200 relay, finishing fifth. The team raced a 1:29.21, dropping nearly two seconds on their entry time.
It was a busy field for the Badgers in the 200 free as Hosack, Doty and Palmer all competed in the B-Final. The trio went 10th, 12th and 15th overall with times of 1:45.79, 1:47.04, and 1:47.72, respectively.
Junior Kelsi Artim and sophomore Jenna Silvestri represented Wisconsin in the 100 breast finals, finishing 10th and 18th overall, respectively. At 1:00.31 and 1:01.10, both swimmers set new career-bests in the event.
Rounding out Friday's finals for the Badgers, junior Alex Reddington finished 20th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.26, followed by sophomore Izzy Lampre in 22nd, touching at 54.50.
Senior Kendall Smith set a new personal best in the 200 free prelims (1:49.54) and was selected as Wisconsin's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award ahead of the night's finals.
