Cameron Tysoe wins Badgers' first medal, Wisconsin stays strong in fourth
Bloomington, Ind. – The Wisconsin men's swimming & diving team completed day three of four at the Big Ten Championships on Friday, holding its fourth-place position with a total score of 523.
Australian senior Cameron Tysoe earned Wisconsin's first medal of the championships, taking home bronze in the 100 back with a new career-best time of 46.03. Freshman Wes Jekel followed, finishing in 8th place at 48:00, while junior Matthew Novinski finished 10th – second in the B-Final – with a time of 46.89.
In the 100 fly, junior MJ Mao and Wes Jekel finished fifth and eighth overall, touching at 46.09 and 47.05, respectively. Sophomore Erik Gessner joined, coming in 16th overall – eighth in the B-Final – at 47.80.
Senior Michael Milinovich and sophomore Caleb Aman touched at 3:45.09 and 3:47.83 to earn fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 400 IM. Sophomore Graham Miotke tailed, setting a new career-best time of 3:49.61 to finish second in the C-Final (17th overall).
MJ Mao swam a 52.43 to finish seventh in the 100 breast, followed by sophomore Eli Fouts, who touched at 54.24 to place fifth in the C-Final (21st overall).
In the 200 free, senior Griffin Back (1:36.60) finished eighth in the B-Final, while his classmates Niko Stines and Kevin Braun came in fourth and fifth in the C-Final. Stines swam a new career-best 1:36.07, with Braun right behind at 1:36.17.
To wrap up the night, Back, Braun, Novinski and Jekel swam a 1:18.43 to finish seventh in the 200 free relay.
The men will be back in the pool tomorrow morning for the final day of competition, with Saturday's prelims beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT from the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington, Indiana.
