Another in-state battle awaits the Badgers
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's tennis team has another opportunity to protect their home state on Thursday, February 6th when they are up against Marquette at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The matchup between the Badgers (7-1) and the Golden Eagles is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
1. SEASON RECAP: Wisconsin currently has a 7-1 overall record. The Badgers have been successful in doubles play, clinching the doubles point in six out of their seven home wins. In singles play, three Badgers hold undefeated records. Junior Robert Krill holds the lead with an 8-0 record while senior Chase Colton and sophomore Daniel Nuzhny both have 3-0 records. Freshman Gabriel Huber has also begun the season successfully with a 6-1 record in singles action. On the doubles courts, Lenard Soha and Jesper Freimuth have not given up a match, holding a 5-0 doubles record.
2. CAPTIVATING KRILL: Robert Krill was unstoppable last weekend, recording a total of three singles wins for the Badgers. Krill put up the solo win against Princeton in singles play, besting his opponent in two straight sets. He logged a second two set win over his Green Bay opponent before he clinched the fourth point for Wisconsin against IUPUI later that day in another two sets.
3. SCOUTING MARQUETTE: The Badgers are hosting their second in-state battle of the season on Thursday when Marquette comes to town. Wisconsin holds the lead in the all-time series with a 55-2-1 record. Not only is UW 36-1-1 at home, but they hold a 22-match winning streak against the Golden Eagles. The last time these two teams met in 2019, Wisconsin clinched the doubles point and went 4-6 in singles play, ending the match with a 5-2 win over Marquette. Currently, Marquette has a 1-3 record after defeating Green Bay, 6-1, but falling to Minnesota, Iowa, and Princeton.
4. ITA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT: The 2020 Oracle ITA Division I National Men's Tennis Indoor Championship is coming to Nielsen Tennis Stadium, Feb. 14-17. This marks the first time Wisconsin has hosted the tournament since 1979. The event will comprise of 16 of the top Division I men's tennis teams, including Wisconsin and two other Big Ten teams.
