TEMPE, Ariz. – On the third day of the Sun Devil Classic, the Wisconsin Softball team (10-9) lost a tough one to Southern Utah with a 2-0 score.
Â
The Badgers seemed to find a stride in hopes of a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning when Jolie Fish hit a lead-off double. Taylor Johnson was hit by the pitch, which advanced Fish to second. Both of them would advance another base after a passed ball.
Â
Abby Herbst reached first on a fielder's choice, and Johnson proceeded to third, but Fish would be thrown out at home on the play to make it two outs for the Badgers. Lauren Foster lined out to right field, and despite the late game efforts, the Badgers would lose their final game in Arizona.
Â
UW had three hits on the day, and the other two came from Ally Miklesh and Taylor Johnson. Miklesh laid a bunt in the bottom of the third and got on base. She would steal second before being left on base at the end of the inning.
Â
Johnson's hit came in the bottom of the fifth. She hit a lead-off single up the middle and would make it all the way to third from a ground out and fouled out at-bats. She would be left on base after Jordan Little fouled out.
Â
The Thunderbirds got their two runs of the game in the top of the first and second innings when a Southern Utah player hit a home run, and a series of hits in the second put them in position to score another.
Â
Haley Hestekin started the game for the Badgers and would pitch the first five innings of the game. Hestekin totaled five strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter. Kaitlyn Menz closed for the Badgers in the final two innings and also didn't walk a single batter.
