MADISON, Wis. - Behind a Big Ten Conference record from
Josie Schaefer, the Wisconsin women's track and field team opened the 2021 indoor season by hosting Illinois at the Badger Icebreaker on Saturday in the Shell. In addition to Schaefer's record, the Badgers won nine events and recorded nine personal bests. .
Record for Schaefer
Schaefer set a personal best twice in the shot put before unleashing her record-breaking mark with her final toss. Her throw of 59 feet, 4 1/4 inches broke the Big Ten mark of 59-0 3/4 set by Failth Sherrill of Indiana in 2011. Schaefer also broke the Wisconsin record of 58-6 3/4 set by Kelsey Card on Jan. 23, 2016.
Coming in behind Schaefer was redshirt freshman
Chloe Lindeman, who finished second with a personal record mark of 52-2, an improvement of nearly five feet. Lindeman also won the weight throw with a toss of 66-6 1/2, a personal record by nearly seven feet.
Underclassmen rise to the occasion
Freshman
Kiley Robbins had an impressive start to her career as a Badger by winning the 60-meter dash in a personal best time of 7.51. Robbins was also able to secure a second-place finish in the 300-meter dash in 42.36.
Sophomore transfer
Tia Dorshorst made her debut as a Badger, winning the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches.
Sophomore
Destiny Huven started the 2021 season right where she left off 2020, winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.55. The also finished fourth in the 60-meer dash in 7.73.
Sophomore
Ali Dorn won the 600 meters in 1:32.02 as well as being a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay team. She teamed with
Bianca Stubler,
Danielle Bellino and
Madison Mooney in the come from behind win in 3:48.68. Illinois finished second in 3:48.90. Mooney also finished second in the 1,000 meter run in 2:47.79 while Stubler was second in the 600 meters in 1:32.13.
Sophomore
Taylor Gilling won the 300-meter dash with a time of 40.60 ahead of teammate Robbins.
Junior
Armoni Brown won the triple jump with a mark of 37-10 3/4 and also finished second in the long jump at 18-1.
Up Next
The Badgers will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, next weekend to compete in the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
