Badgers fall at St. Cloud State

Mersch scores shorthanded for Badgers' lone goal

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team (2-4-0) dropped the second game of their series 4-1 against No. 3 St. Cloud State (6-2-0) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Saturday.

The first period was scoreless with shots 10-9 in favor of St. Cloud. The Badgers had two power-play opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net with the man advantage. 

St. Cloud broke the ice at 3:13 of the second period with a power-play goal by Kevin Fitzgerald from Jami Krannila and Zach Okabe.

Micah Miller scored shorthanded to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead at 5:47 in the second, assisted by Fitzgerald.

The Huskies scored another power-play goal at 12:49 to wrap up a three-goal second period.

The Badgers headed into the third period tasked with overcoming a 3-0 deficit.

Dominick Mersch ruined St. Cloud State's shutout hopes with a short-handed goal at 12:17 in the third period. Jesper Peltonen broke the puck out to Jack Gorniak who raced down the boards past and SCSU defender and into the offensive zone, before he set up Mersch in front of the net.


St. Cloud scored an empty-net goal with just 23 seconds remaining to win 4-1.
