Badgers dropped by Michigan

Wisconsin falls in Big Ten opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team got great goaltending and was perfect on the penalty kill, but ended up falling 3-0 to No. 2 Michigan at Yost Ice Arena in the first Big Ten matchup of the season.

Wisconsin (2-5-0, 0-1-0-0 Big Ten), the defending Big Ten regular-season champions, could not crack Michigan's Erik Portillo in net. They successfully held off the Wolverines (6-1-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten) in the first period thanks to 17 saves by goaltender Jared Moe and a defense that protected around to prevent second chances..

Michigan's Kent Johnson broke the ice in the second period. Owen Power passed across to Nick Blankenburg in the slot who then found Johnson coming down the wing to take a 1-0 lead.

The Badgers kept on the pressure heading into the second half of the second. Brock Caufield jumped up on a loose puck for a breakaway chance and Gorniak took a slap at the rebound, but Portillo made both saves.

Wisconsin's Zach Urdahl and Michigan's Luke Hughes earned coincidental penalties at 16:33 in the second, leading to two minutes of four-on-four play. Michigan went up 2-0 during that stretch with less than two minutes remaining in the second period. Blankenburg scored from the edge of the crease, assisted by Johnson and Matty Beniers.

Michigan led in shots 35-20 heading into the third period.

Power scored Michigan's final goal of the game at 3:26 into the final period when his pass hit a Badger in front, before bouncing into the net.

That made the final, 3-0.

Notes to know:
  • The Badgers allowed just their second third period goal in seven games this season.
  • Wisconsin was perfect on two penalty kills
  • Jared Moe tied his career mark with 38 saves
