Badgers Slow Down No. 8 Terps

Wisconsin wins third game against ranked opponent this season

MADISON, Wis. – UW men's soccer is on a roll with a 1-0 victory over No. 8 Maryland at McClimon Soccer Complex Sunday.

After a back-and-forth first half, Andrew Akindele struck the back of the net in the 52nd minute after Ignasi Marques' shot on goal was deflected. Marques was credited with the assist on the play.

The win extends UW's unbeaten streak to six, including five wins against Butler, Marquette, Milwaukee, Rutgers and Maryland.

"It feels really good to finally get the first goal," Akindele said. "It feels good to be rewarded for the hard work we've been putting in."

Before today, Wisconsin had never beaten the Terrapins in Madison.

Adir Raphael got the start in goal for the Badgers, but left the game for a brief seven minute period before finishing the remainder of the contest. He took part in his fourth consecutive shutout in his fourth start for UW and added a pair of saves.

Wisconsin outshot Maryland 11-7 and 7-2 on goal. The team also earned four corners to none for the Terrapins.

Next up for UW is a trip east to Columbus, Ohio, for a Friday matchup with the Buckeyes. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
