ST. PAUL — The top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team defeated St. Thomas, 7-1, in the first ever meeting between the two teams on Saturday afternoon at the St. Thomas Academy Rink.Â
Multi-point games from Casey O'Brien, Sophie Shirley, Makenna Webster and Maddi Wheeler helped lead Wisconsin (14-0-1, 10-0-1-1) to a victory over St. Thomas (4-8-1, 2-8-1-0).
Wheeler opened the game early, scoring just over two minutes into the game to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
Brette Pettet got the Badgers going early in the second with a goal just over a minute into play. O'Brien lit the lamp later in the period, notching Wisconsin's third goal of the game. Webster and Nicole LaMantia each put up a goal to give the Badgers a 5 point edge. St. Thomas put up on goal in the second and Wisconsin went into the final frame up 5-1.
Wheeler put up a second goal to take Wisconsin's tally to six. Sophie Shirley netted the puck with just over a minute left to play and the Badgers took the game 7-1.
