MADISON, Wis. — The vast majority of college bowl forecasters have the Wisconsin football team headed for another New Year's Day assignment in Florida.
But at least one intriguing projection has the Badgers in line for a venue they've never played in before.
Athlon, CBS Sports, Sporting News, USA Today and 247 Sports all have UW traveling to Tampa for the sixth time since 1995, appearing in the Outback Bowl vs. an SEC opponent for the fifth time since 1998.
The Sporting News projects Wisconsin (8-4 overall) will face Tennessee (7-5).
Athlon, CBS Sports and USA Today forecast the Badgers will take on Kentucky (9-3).
The word from 247 Sports is that UW will face Arkansas (8-4).
The outlier assignment for Wisconsin, via Yahoo Sports, has it playing in the Las Vegas Bowl opposite Arizona State (8-4). The game is scheduled for Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Allegiant Stadium.
The Las Vegas Bowl has been up and running since 1992, but it's been moved from Sam Boyd Stadium to the ultra-modern Allegiant facility, the NFL home of the Las Vegas Raiders.
The pool of participants in the Vegas Bowl changed last year. A Pac-12 Conference team will face a Big Ten Conference foe in 2021, '23 and '25. In 2022 and '24, the Pac-12 will be pitted against the SEC.
Wisconsin is bowl eligible for the 20th consecutive year, which is the third-longest streak among Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Its matchup is expected Sunday.
