Sunday Split: UW goes 1-1 against Maryland

Schwartz earns shutout against the Terps

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Wisconsin softball team wrapped up its first weekend in Florida with a split against Maryland on Sunday at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex. UW took the first game, 1-0, while Maryland won the second, 2-1, in eight innings.

Maddie Schwartz pitched 14 2/3 innings during the doubleheader with eight strikeouts.

UW ended its first weekend of the 2021 season with a 3-3 record after earning two wins against Penn State on Friday night.

Game One
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Badgers got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to a pair of doubles.

Skylar Sirdashney launched a double down the left field line before Fiona Girardot doubled to left field to score Sirdashney.

In the fifth inning, Sirdashney launched a two-out triple to right field, but UW was unable to drive her home.

Maryland had runners on first and second in the top of the sixth inning with no outs, but the Badgers turned a triple play to get out of the inning.
Schwartz picked up her second win and shutout of the year as she went the distance, pitching seven innings with three strikeouts.

Game Two
Neither team was able to score a run until the eighth inning as the Badgers scored in the top of the eighth when Gabi Carra cross the plate after a Maryland error to give UW a 1-0 lead.

However, after scoring the tying run, Maryland loaded the bases with two outs and McFarland hit a single to left field to end the game.

Schwartz went 7 2/3 innings with five strikeouts.

Up Next:
UW heads back to Leesburg, Florida, on March 11-14, for six more Big Ten Conference games. The Badgers will face Ohio State on March 11-12 and Michigan on March 13-14.
