Senior knew Wisconsin was the right choice
MADISON, Wis.— Griffin Barela, a senior from Lakewood, Colorado, shares with us a look into his life as a Badger.
When did you know you wanted to play in college?
After I finished second in my first American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournament. I played baseball up until high school, so when I finished second at my first AJGA after my freshman year it made me realize I could compete with the best junior golfers and then I set my sights on playing in college.
What is something golf has taught you?
Be patient when things aren't going your way. Golf is one of the most frustrating sports because there are a lot of times where you do everything right and don't get the result you want, so learning to accept that can be valuable in more than just golf.
Why did you choose to attend Wisconsin?Â
I loved everything about the campus and it had the right mix of golf and academics. When I took my first visit I didn't have any connections to the school, so it was really the campus, high-end academics and the great team chemistry that I saw on my visit that made me want to come here.
What are you looking forward to in the upcoming season?
Being able to compete with my teammates after not being able to for the past year. These last 10 months not being able to compete with my teammates has really made me desire getting back out there that much more. Unlike most sports, we were still able to compete individually during the pandemic, but competing with your teammates is something completely different that I look forward to doing again.
